12th July – Lea 10K ‘Fun’ run

Published by admin

The road run on Thursday, after mainly cross-country outings earlier in the year, left my feet feeling fairly bruised, so I was particularly looking forward to the Lea 10K. But it wasn’t a race and the boys had agreed to cycle round with us.

Despite a particularly sharp shower just before the start at 10.30, the weather worked well and we were dry all the way round. When the hooter went for the start, despite the original plan for him to pace Fi round the course, Louis (age 8) disappeared into the distance never to be seen again – not until the finish line anyway.

At the 2.5km mark, the turn-round for the 5k runners, Charlie (age 5) managed to cycle into a ditch and disappear (him AND the bike) from view completely – but after a few tears, wiping away the mud and rubbing the nettle stings, he hopped back on determined to do the full 10k.

Charlie proved to be a great pacer and was determined to beat his brother to the finish line – unfortunately he had to wait for me, so there were a few more tears of desperation as he saw victory flying away from him (he’s very competitive). Fortunately he was happy to take the lead heading up the main drag into Lea and got a prize for the best crash and youngest cyclist. Louis won the prize for coming first overall.

So my achievements paled against the boys. . . my time was about one hour and ten minutes, which equates to about an hour overall once I’ve adjusted various Charlie-factors. That points to a 5km time of about 30 minutes, which is my current target – so I was happy with the run.
